The international guidelines for surgery are based on BMI criteria as follows:
BMI < 30 – surgery is not indicated, medically supervised weight loss if necessary.
BMI 30 – 35 – surgery indicated if there is ONE weight related health issue present OR there are no weight related health issues but medically supervised diets have not been successful.
BMI >35 – surgery indicated without any weight related health issues needing to be present.

What is BMI
Body Mass Index (BMI) is an assessment generally used by health experts to determine if a person is underweight, within a healthy weight range, overweight or obese. It does not account for body composition.

- 18.5- Underweight
- 18.5 – 25- Normal
- 25 – 30- Overweight
- Above 30- Obese
- Above 35- Severely obese
- Above 40- Morbidly obese
- Above 50- Super Obese
